When I worked as a recruiter for a large corporation, the one thing that was consistent was the nervousness of brand-new college graduates, as they began their careers.

However, I noticed that new employees who had also completed one or more internships were much more comfortable.  That’s because they had already made it over the rough spots, such as learning the corporate environment, job requirements, and the finer points of office politics.

As my son went off to college, I strongly suggested he make sure he spent at least one summer interning before he went to work, so that he would start his new career the easy way.
