A lawyer friend of mine asked me the other day — what is the point of using special-purpose exhibit tabs on legal documents? Why not just go to the office supply store and purchase generic page dividers? To help him understand, I took a big binder full of legal documents and counted up the number of tabs that it contained — there were over a hundred! Then I told him — in order to use generic page dividers, you would have to make room in this binder for an additional 100 sheets of paper — and thick paper besides. With these special tabs, they can simply be attached directly to the edge of each document, so that no separate divider page is necessary — this saves money as well as space.
