Lots of European cars in America need high-octane fuel. In Europe standard fuel is 95 octane and premium is 98 octane. In the US I don’t know the exact figures but i believe its lower than that. A low octane fuel can damage an engine by igniting at a slightly different time than it was designed for, leading to knocking. Also low octane fuel in a high octane engine causes sub-optimal performance and may actually DECREASE how many miles you get per gallon so with standard fuel you might actually end up paying more in fuel.
